About

Darkness is created and written by Nicholas Brendon, B.C. Thompson, and Alan O.W. Barnes

Illustrated by Alan O.W. Barnes

B.C. and Nicholas met when Nicholas voice acted the main character for one of B.C.’s cartoon shows called ‘SuperCat’ along with veteran voice actor, Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants).

Darkness began as a story idea Nicholas and B.C. kicked around for a few months in 2008.

Once they had the characters and the overall story conceived, B.C. invited Alan to join them as they fleshed out thematic ideas, and tried develop the intricate ‘hard sci-fi’ idea into something with emotional resonance.

Though Darkness was designed to be a TV show pitch, as Alan began to draw the storyboard another idea occurred. The story lent itself to an obvious art style, very ‘Hitchcock-ian’, with hard shadows almost drawing the light more than the darkness. Alan, a long-time comic fan, pitched the idea of setting up the storyboard for the pilot episode as a web comic. Thus the site you have found.

Here are some of the computer art designs for the (eventual) show.
